The Armenian Church, first Christian Church in Singapore, was the masterpiece of George Drumgoole Coleman, architect of many of the country's finest historical buildings. Built in 1835, the Church is dedicated to St Gregory the Illuminator. A lion's share of the cost incurred was donated by the Armenians, one of the many minority groups who came to Singapore in search of better lives.
Armenian Street is named after the famous church and its Chinese name is Seng Poh Sin Chu Au. Armenian Church was designated a national monument in 1973.
Architecture
Based on the British neo-classical style, the Armenian Church is a circular structure, imposed on a square plane. Coleman chose a design which suited to Singapore's tropical climate. The wide verandahs provided shade and shielded the timber-louvred windows on the ground floor from heavy rains. The wooden pews are backed with woven rattan, a light and cool material. On three fronts of the Church are Tuscan Doric porticos capped with triangular pediments. The parsonage and the memorial garden to Armenians are also on the Church grounds. |
