Maldives Transportation

International Connectivity
The Hulule international airport, just a few minutes away from Male’, the capital, caters to international flights from all across the world. However, it is the only link between Maldives and the rest of the world.

Domestic Transportation
From the airport island there is a round the clock ferry service to the capital Male’. There are three domestic airports which cater tointerisland flights. They are located respectively at the Gan island in Addu Atoll, Kadu island in Haddummati Atoll and the Hanimadu island in the South Tiladummati Atoll. While Air Maldives operates airbuses and seaplanes, Hummingbird Helicopters and Seagull Airways operate interisland helicopter services.
International merchant shipping is handled by the Male’ port. The fishing dhoni is the traditional all-purpose vessel in Maldives. Although dhonis have sails, most are also powered by engines. They are used mainly within the sheltered waters of each atoll. Travel through the open sea from one atoll to another is usually by vedis, larger, squareshaped wooden cargo boats.

Road Transport
Bicycles and motorbikes are the most common means of road transport. You will be amused to find that motor cars are the status symbol of the elite class. Limited taxi services are also available.
